Cold as Ice - With Smite build?
Following on from an earlier thread with a monk who had problems with this quest got me thinking.
I remember after many attempts at cold as ice using mainly smite skills I had to revert to /R poison/degen to kill him - as many others have with a variety of builds - but not Smite!!!!!!
Questions:
a) Has ANYONE beaton the Griffon with a Smite Build?
b) Should a full Smite Monk be able to take down the Griffon?
As it's a solo quest this should be possible - I dont believe Anet would (or should!!!??) have a quest so imbalanced that it's only completable with specific skills from certain professions.
c) Surely a good smiter should be able to hold his own against ANY in a 1 v 1?
If smiters are not supposed to be 'killers' then why give them the smiting line in the first place? -
d) Is the main design heal/prot and just throw in a bit of smite as and when you feel like it?
If so - why bother - concentrate on heal and let others do the damage!!!
OK - smiting your warrior (/ party) gives them much more dps - this is not my point.
OK - I accept other profs can have higher damage output - but we are superb healers so slightly lower damage is easily offset by our ability to heal ourselves.
Which means that good smiting SHOULD be able to take down the like of the griffon!! - imho. (ok - add one or two pve skills if you really have to).
If a lowly spirit spammer (do you're own dirty work!! ) can take him then surely a Revered Holy Monk Of Smiting Deathness, Pain and Awesome Power should also be able to???
Your thoughts?

[dissonance] is the only hard part about this quest. Or maybe [shadowsong] is you are doing it with a melee.
A smiter can do this easily as long as you get around the interupts or just run up to him and body block him from the start. He will only lay his first spirit and after that he won't place any more if you don't let him take another step forward. Kill his first ghost and just out heal his auto attacks. Bring [mantra of resolve] in case his first ghost is dissonance and blessed sig to keep your energy up if it is.

I'm sure there are lots of " i did it like this" answers. Thank you but that is not the question.
damien979: thanks - Is this how you beat him or is this just your considered recomendation from your gaming experiance?
What was the build you used?
I want someone to post on here and say - "YES - I BEAT HIM WITH A SMITE BUILD AND THIS IS THE BAR I USED"

55 and Shield of Judgement will do the job, as long as you have [skill]You Move Like A Dwarf[/skill]. Interrupt his disenchantment summon and its GG.

I beat him as a monk/necro. The key was getting the bone minions up to block him from moving. I can't find the build/thread but I belive using the one where you get 2 minions up helps, and have Blood of the Master to keep them alive. You just have to be fast in getting minons up and in the right places. I also brough the Dwarf Skill Ear Bite, which caused him to bleed and speeded up his health degen. SS helped too of course.
If he breaks free from the minions its over because he will create his spirits

D: smiting...well if you insist...using a full monk bar...i suppose you can just 55with SoJ and make sure to intterupt key spirits(ie dissonance, shadowsong) with...oh wait, then it won't be a full monk bar. have fun experimenting hahaha...

The main problem I found was interupting while he was casting the spirits.
When he decided to attack that was ok -
My build that 'nearly' had him - well, lets call it a draw then was something like:
[reversal of damage][Protective spirit][bane signet][Signet of Judgement][holy strike][castigation][banish][you move like a dwarf]
There were many other skills used - from thinking I could use [WoH] to heal myself, or just [healing breeze]-I think even [mending] made an appearance. The odd Pve skill thrown in [necrosis],[radiation field], even tried again with [ebon vanguard sniper support] after the buff to see if i got a lucky shot in.
So - 55 with [soj] seems to be the only way with a 'nearly' full monk bar.
There has GOT to be some good smiter monks out there that can do this without using 55.- I dont want him to kill himself while I continually heal myself - I want to SMITE HIS SCALEY HEAD OFF using a good smite / heal or prot bar!!!!
ONE DAY.........................................

Have you tried using Ray of Judgement instead of Signet of Judgement as your elite to boost your damage? If you're willing to use a single skill from a secondary prof, go rit and try Gaze of Fury or Consume Soul to deal with the spirits, rather than interrupting. Or try mesmer Power Return for your interrupt, which has a 5 sec recharge. Either way, you can handle the spirits without relying on knockdowns for interrupts, letting you bring smites that do higher damage (Smite, Spear of Light, etc.).

Mo/R with a longbow + [skill]read the wind[/skill] + [poison tip signet] + some selfheal
This is how I did it. Takes some time, but it works......
Doing it with smite only seems pretty impossible to me.

Sounds like a challange to me!!!!!!!!

I have done it a fair few times "the easy way" - now it's like a challange for any smite monk - but so far no-one has managed it as far as I can tell. (well - certainly not my failed 15-20 attempts or so).
Easy gets pretty boring pretty quick - just check the general threads in Riverside for the last years or so :-)
Come on - All monk skills + 1 or 2 pve skills. No secondary. No 55's.
can it be done or not???....................prove it!!!!!!
( I will spot photoshopped skill bars with my 16 in Divine Eyesight)

Someday I hope to take you up on that challenge, Arlan. Unfortunately, my smiter is still in S. Shivers working through Prophecies, so it will be a while before he gets to the griffin.

Here's the build I threw together to finish the quest. Finished it the first time.
It looks weird I know but it worked so meh
[bleh;OwYT0SHDTKnQNymElgfwk4UEZAA]
It took ages though.About 10-15 mins as you have to run away a lot

Do we have a winner. I think so - i instinctivley stayed away from adren skills (well, being a monk you do, dont you) so maybe the brawling headbut makes the diff?. I had castigation and holy strike instead of your spear and headbut. I called it a draw after about 25 mins.
I'm going to try yours and see how it goes. Anything for a laugh I suppose.
Switch to scythe for melee to get in more hits maybe.? Adren on a monk - sounds mental to me!!!!
